MDP’s Sobe Wins Hithadhoo North By-Election by a Landslide
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Abdulla Sodig (Sobe), has secured a decisive victory in today’s by-election held to elect a member of Parliament for the Hithadhoo North constituency.
According to provisional results from the ballot boxes counted so far, Sobe, who previously served three terms as Mayor of Addu City, emerged as the clear winner. He contested against Ahmed Saeed (Soda), the candidate representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
With this victory, the number of MDP members in the People’s Majlis has increased from 12 to 13, while the ruling PNC’s parliamentary representation has dropped from 75 to 74 seats.
The by-election was held following the vacancy of the Hithadhoo North parliamentary seat. Sobe is a seasoned politician with many years of experience in Addu City’s political landscape and has held several public leadership roles over the years.
