Nasheed - Fayyaz Alliance Sealed: Dual Endorsement Reshapes MDP Power Battle
Former President Mohamed Nasheed and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail have formally joined forces in a political alliance that is set to significantly influence the internal dynamics of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
At a joint press conference held today under their “Big Change” campaign, Nasheed announced his endorsement of Fayyaz Ismail in the MDP’s upcoming presidential primary, which will determine the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election. In a reciprocal move, Fayyaz declared his support for Nasheed’s bid to become the party’s Chairperson.
The partnership signals a coordinated strategy by the two figures to reshape both the party’s leadership and the country’s governance model. Alongside their endorsements, they unveiled a reform agenda proposing sweeping structural changes, including a system where the roles of Head of State and Head of Government are separated and elected individually.
Nasheed, who announced his intention to contest for MDP Chairperson, said the party must be strengthened to deliver such reforms. He expressed confidence that he is best positioned to lead the party at this critical moment, noting that his decision comes from a firm personal conviction and a willingness to step away from his previous international role to focus on domestic politics.
Fayyaz, backing Nasheed’s leadership bid, said the party currently needs a unifying figure capable of addressing internal divisions and steering it forward. He described Nasheed as the leader best suited to take on that responsibility.
Nasheed also indicated his interest in assuming the role of Head of State under the proposed new governance model, should the reforms be realized.
The MDP Chairperson election is expected to be announced within the coming week. So far, in addition to Nasheed, Mikail Naseem has also entered the race, setting the stage for a closely watched contest within the party.
With both leadership and presidential ambitions now intertwined, the Nasheed–Fayyaz alliance marks a pivotal moment in MDP politics ahead of the 2028 election cycle.
