MDP Opens Applications for Chairperson Post

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially opened applications for the party’s top administrative position, Chairperson, marking a key internal election aimed at strengthening party leadership.

In a statement released today, the MDP said interested candidates can submit their nominations from now until 2:00 PM on May 2. Voting eligibility will be limited to members registered in the party registry as of April 22.

According to the party, candidates must meet specific requirements, including being a registered MDP member and fulfilling the criteria outlined under Article 73 of the Constitution and Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, standards typically required of individuals contesting parliamentary elections.

The party has arranged for nominations to be submitted via an online Google Form. Required documents include a criminal record and debt record issued by the Department of Judicial Administration, as well as a record from the Maldives Correctional Service.

So far, those who have announced their intention to contest the Chairperson post include Galolhu South MP Mikaeel Naseem, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former MP Ahmed Alhan Fahmy.

The MDP stated that voting for the Chairperson election is scheduled for June 12, between 2:30 PM and 8:00 PM.
