Fayyaz Calls for Opposition Leaders’ Coalition Against Muizzu
Former chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has called for a coalition of opposition leaders to “save the nation” from President Mohamed Muizzu.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Fayyaz said Muizzu had violated the presidential oath he took upon assuming office. He alleged that the president had “captured the entire state” and was acting against the responsibilities entrusted to him.
Fayyaz further stressed that despite political differences, opposition forces must unite and launch nationwide demonstrations against the government in order to amplify public frustration and dissent. He also claimed that President Muizzu had strayed from the principles of his presidential oath and was no longer acting rationally.
In his post, Fayyaz appealed to former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to come together in a united front.
“We are ready to work with the three former presidents without hesitation,” Fayyaz said.
Additionally, Fayyaz called on independent judges and autonomous institutions to take action to secure the release of detained journalists. His remarks suggested that the country’s independent institutions must urgently intervene amid the ongoing political tensions.
