Former President Nasheed Calls For an Caretaker Government
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for the formation of an caretaker government that includes all political parties, amid growing political unrest in the Maldives.
Nasheed made the call today in a post on X. In his statement, he said that the President has lost the confidence of the Cabinet, adding that public trust in the presidency has also now eroded.
Highlighting global economic pressures, Nasheed noted that ongoing international conflicts are having unavoidable impacts on the Maldivian economy. He stressed that urgent reforms to the fundamental structure of the state are necessary. Alongside these reforms, he said, a free and fair election must be held, requiring an interim government formed with the participation of all political parties.
Nasheed’s remarks come at a time of significant political upheaval, following the resignation and dismissal of 10 cabinet ministers.
