The ruling People's National Congress (PNC), which holds a supermajority in the People's Majlis, has decided to move forward with efforts to remove Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim from his post, with enough signatures now reportedly secured to submit the motion to parliament.

According to information received, the PNC parliamentary group resolved during a meeting to immediately begin collecting signatures required to dismiss Nazim from the position of Deputy Speaker. A member of the parliamentary group reportedly said that the required number of signatures had been completed “within a very short time.”

Under the rules of parliament, the Speaker or Deputy Speaker can be removed through a resolution submitted with signatures from no fewer than one-fourth of the total members of parliament. In the current 93-member parliament, this requires at least 24 signatures.

The sudden move by the PNC comes amid growing speculation that President Mohamed Muizzu has lost confidence in Nazim.

With the required signatures now secured, the motion is expected to be formally submitted to the parliamentary administration during official working hours in the coming days.
