MDP Leadership Shake-Up as Senior Officials Removed

Fresh internal tensions have surfaced within the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof and Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed have reportedly been removed from their positions by Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

The development comes at a sensitive time for the party, just days after the 2026 local council elections, where the MDP secured a narrow overall victory and gained renewed political momentum.

Abdul Ghafoor Moosa assumed the role of interim chairperson in December 2025 following the resignation of former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail. He secured broad support within the party’s National Council, marking a transition period in MDP leadership.

Since then, the party has been navigating internal divisions that emerged during the contested leadership process, which saw disagreements, walkouts, and factional disputes over the interim chairmanship.

While official details surrounding the removal of Ahmed Mauroof and Ibrahim Waheed remain limited, political observers view the move as part of a broader effort by the interim leadership to consolidate control and reorganize key positions within the party.

Ibrahim Waheed had previously played a central role in party leadership discussions, including during the contentious interim chairperson selection process.

The shake-up is likely to intensify internal debate within the MDP, particularly as the party prepares for future national-level political battles.

Coming on the heels of a strong electoral showing, the leadership changes could either streamline decision-making or deepen factional divides within the opposition.

For now, the removals highlight that despite electoral gains, the MDP continues to grapple with internal power struggles that may shape its direction in the months ahead.
