“We Can Never Get Too Distant”- Nasheed and Solih Recommit to MDP Unity
Former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih today downplayed speculation of political rifts between them, stressing that personal or political disagreements could never create lasting distance, as they remain closely aligned despite past differences.
Speaking to the media following their meeting, both leaders emphasised that their relationship extends beyond temporary disagreements, with Nasheed stating that they are “much closer than that” to allow any issue to permanently divide them. The remarks appeared aimed at dispelling long-standing perceptions of rivalry that emerged during internal divisions within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Addressing questions about the 2028 presidential election, Nasheed and Solih said that the matter was not discussed during their talks. They clarified that their immediate focus remains on strengthening the party, reforming its internal structures, and preparing for the upcoming local council elections.
The leaders said priority is being given to rebuilding unity within the MDP and restoring organisational cohesion following recent political setbacks. They indicated that discussions at this stage are centred on grassroots mobilisation and ensuring the party presents a unified front ahead of the local polls.
The meeting between Nasheed and Solih is being widely viewed as a significant step toward easing internal tensions within the opposition party, with observers noting that cooperation between the two former presidents could play a decisive role in shaping the MDP’s future direction.
While speculation continues over the party’s long-term leadership and presidential ambitions, Tuesday’s remarks suggest that both leaders are seeking to steer the conversation away from individual political futures and toward collective party reform and electoral readiness.
