Promised Weekly Press Conference Not Held Again This Week

The weekly press conference that President Mohamed Muizzu had promised to hold whenever he was in Malé was once again not held this week, with no explanation provided.

In addition, the government’s spokesperson’s weekly press briefing, which officials had said would be held every Thursday, was also not conducted last week.

President Muizzu announced during this year’s Presidential Address, delivered on February 5, that beginning in March, he would meet with journalists every week.

He said,“To provide information directly to the media, starting from March this year, I will meet with journalists every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. as a regular practice.”

Despite this commitment, the President did not hold a meeting with journalists this week either. The last time he met the press was on June 29.

It is worth noting that the June 29 press conference itself took place only after a three-week gap. Even during that session, many journalists were not given the opportunity to ask questions before the event was brought to an end.

With another week now passing without the promised press conference, following the earlier three-week interruption, the government has still not provided any explanation for why the meetings are not being held.
