Delays in Student Allowance Payments Linked to Late University Invoices, Says Minister Haidar

Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ali Haidar has stated that delays in disbursing funds to Maldivian students studying abroad are largely due to universities sending invoices late to the ministry.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Dr. Haidar said that 75 percent of students studying overseas are currently receiving their payments in accordance with regulations.

Responding to questions from journalists regarding difficulties in releasing funds, the minister acknowledged that there have been delays in some payments. He explained that the disbursement process requires verification and checks by three separate institutions before funds are released. In certain cases, universities send invoices with only about a week remaining before the payment deadline, creating challenges in meeting those deadlines.

“As a result, we face certain difficulties in meeting the deadlines,” he said, adding that late submission of invoices is the primary cause of delays. However, he noted that the system has now been strengthened and improved compared to previous arrangements.

In December last year, reports surfaced claiming that some students abroad were forced to drop out of their courses due to non-payment of fees. The ministry, however, stated that no such cases had been formally reported.

Dr. Haidar further assured that payments are now being made on time, with some students even receiving funds before the due date. He emphasized that the ministry is continuously working to minimize issues that may result in delays in disbursement.
