Nazim Resigns, Calling Allegations Baseless

Ahmed Nazim, Member of Parliament for Dhiggaru and Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, has resigned from his position after rejecting allegations raised against him in a motion submitted by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) seeking his removal.

Nazim announced his resignation today shortly before the Majlis was due to begin debating the motion. His resignation came as the PNC, which holds a supermajority in Parliament, appeared set to secure his removal.

The motion was filed following a decision by the PNC Parliamentary Group on May 13, which declared that it no longer had confidence in Nazim. The party accused him of creating division within Parliament, repeatedly acting against the institution’s interests, using the influence of his office for improper gain, and failing to protect the rights of members due to alleged political bias.

In a statement released today, Nazim categorically denied all allegations. He said the accusations were unsupported by any evidence and noted that neither Parliament’s rules nor the Constitution had been cited as having been violated. He also pointed out that no formal complaint had previously been lodged against him by any party.

Nazim maintained that he had carried out his duties fairly and impartially and had never obstructed any member from fulfilling their responsibilities. However, he said that since all members of the parliamentary group behind the motion had signed in support of his removal, accepting the decision and resigning was the most democratic and dignified course of action.

“While firmly rejecting every allegation made against me without exception, I hereby resign from the position of Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis with immediate effect,” Nazim said in his resignation statement.

Despite stepping down from the post, Nazim pledged to continue working to uphold the rule of law and contribute to efforts aimed at improving the lives of the Maldivian people.
