Bodies of Last Two Divers Recovered From Cave
The bodies of the final two missing Italian divers trapped inside an underwater cave near Alimatha in Vaavu Atoll were recovered today.
The two bodies were retrieved six days after the divers became trapped inside the cave. Authorities had located the bodies earlier this week.
The recovery operation is currently being led by an experienced Finnish cave diving team that arrived in the Maldives with assistance from the Italian government. According to the team, the operation involved the use of advanced equipment including rebreathers, underwater scooters, and modern life-support systems.
Based on the recovery process, the Finnish team brought the bodies out of the cave and transported them to a depth of around 30 meters underwater. From there, Maldivian military and police dive teams worked together to bring the bodies to the surface.
Three bodies had already been recovered yesterday, including that of dive team leader Gianluca Benedetti.
In total, six people lost their lives in the tragic incident, five Italian divers and Maldivian MNDF Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee, who died while participating in the rescue operation.
