HDC Is Dismissing Employees Based on Lists Prepared by PNC MPs Says Fayyaz

Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has alleged that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is dismissing employees based on lists prepared by ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) members of Parliament.

His remarks come after HDC began laying off employees following its decision to abolish a number of positions as part of a restructuring exercise.

In a post on social media, Fayyaz claimed the dismissals are being carried out in violation of the Employment Act. He alleged that employees are being selected for dismissal according to lists submitted by PNC MPs.

“After abolishing positions, HDC is terminating the employment of many staff in violation of employment laws. Without even providing the required 24-hour notice, hundreds of employees believed to support the MDP have been forced out of their jobs. The people being dismissed are selected based on lists prepared by PNC MPs,” Fayyaz wrote.

Fayyaz further claimed that many of those being dismissed are experienced and capable employees who have served HDC for many years, while the same positions are allegedly being filled by political activists.

He also accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration of using its “right-sizing” programme for state-owned enterprises as a means of removing individuals who do not support the government politically.

According to Fayyaz, the dismissals are depriving many families of their income, and he warned that those responsible, including the government and individuals involved in the process would ultimately be held accountable under the law.

HDC has not publicly responded to Fayyaz’s allegations at the time of publication.
