Nasheed and Solih Set for Talks Amid MDP Reconciliation Efforts
Former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are expected to meet amid ongoing efforts to resolve internal divisions within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), according to a trusted source.
The anticipated discussions come as senior party figures intensify talks ahead of upcoming elections, with reunification efforts gaining momentum following Nasheed’s return to active engagement with MDP leaders. Nasheed has recently held meetings with MDP President Abdulla Shahid, and discussions are underway to bring Solih into broader dialogue aimed at easing factional tensions.
Relations between Nasheed and Solih have remained strained since internal disagreements within the MDP escalated during the latter stages of Solih’s presidency, eventually leading to Nasheed leaving the party and forming a separate political movement. Despite this, both leaders continue to command significant influence within the party and its support base.
While neither Nasheed nor Solih has publicly confirmed the timing or agenda of a meeting, this meeting will be a potential step toward reconciling differences within the opposition as it seeks to regroup following recent electoral setbacks.
Any breakthrough between the two former presidents is expected to have a major impact on the future direction of the MDP and opposition politics in the Maldives.
