The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced a large-scale protest in the capital on Friday, October 3, as mounting political tensions and economic frustrations fuel public anger against the government of President Mohamed Muizzu.

The demonstration branded “Lootuvaifi” by MDP is aimed at highlighting what the opposition calls government corruption, misuse of state resources, and a worsening cost-of-living crisis. It also seeks to draw attention to the recently passed Media Control Bill, which critics argue will silence independent journalism and restrict press freedom.

“Our country is being plundered while ordinary Maldivians suffer,” said an MDP member. “This protest is about standing up to the exploitation and demanding accountability from those in power.”

The MDP says the October 3 gathering is not a one-off event but the beginning of a sustained movement for reform. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other senior party leaders are expected to take part.

Police have cautioned that parts of the planned protest may be “unlawful” if they disrupt traffic or public order. Authorities have also warned broadcasters against live coverage of unauthorized demonstrations, citing regulatory codes.

The opposition, however, accuses the government of intimidation tactics and claims attempts are being made to dissuade citizens from joining the protest.

The term “Lootuvaifi,” meaning “being looted,” has quickly become a rallying cry among opposition supporters. Political analysts suggest the framing could resonate strongly with citizens already strained by inflation and economic uncertainty.

Friday’s protest is expected to be one of the largest opposition mobilizations in recent years. How security forces respond, and whether turnout matches expectations, will serve as a crucial test of the government’s handling of dissent, and of the opposition’s ability to rally support on the streets.
