An exclusive BBC Eye investigation has uncovered audio recordings in which a former Bangladeshi leader appears to authorize a severe government-led crackdown on protesters raising questions about the official response to political unrest.

The leaked audio reportedly captures the ex-leader issuing orders that paved the way for excessive force against demonstrators. While the full content of these discussions hasn’t been released, the footage suggests direct involvement in operational decisions that led to deadly outcomes

Calls are mounting for accountability. Opposition groups are urging authorities to initiate an independent inquiry into the audio’s authenticity and pinpoint who gave the orders. Analysts warn that if the leaks are verified, the implicated leader could face charges under international human rights statutes.

Officials have yet to issue a formal statement. While some dismissed the recordings as manipulated or politically motivated, others acknowledge that a transparent investigation may help restore public trust and address national tensions.
