Proposal Submitted to Cut Majlis Term and Hold Two Major Elections Together
A proposal has been submitted to shorten the current term of the People’s Majlis and hold two major national elections together.
The amendment seeks to align the presidential election with the parliamentary election by curtailing the ongoing Majlis term. The proposed constitutional amendment was submitted during a special sitting by PNC–PG parliamentary leader Ibrahim Falaah, and its first reading has been scheduled for the special sitting to be held tomorrow.
According to the bill, if the amendment is passed, the current Majlis term will end on December 1, 2028. The newly elected Majlis would then begin its term on the same date, with each Majlis serving a five-year term. Under the proposal, the first sitting of a new Majlis would also take place on December 1.
The bill further states that starting from 2028, presidential elections and parliamentary elections would be held concurrently.
Under the existing arrangement, if elections continue as scheduled, the current Majlis term would conclude in May 2029.
