Atoll Residents Brace for Record Fuel Prices After Distributor Price Hike
Residents in the atolls are expected to face significantly higher petrol prices after the State Trading Organization (STO) increased fuel prices for private distributors.
While the retail fuel price in Male' remains unchanged at MVR 16.01 per litre for petrol, prices in many atolls are already much higher due to transportation and distribution costs. Following the latest price increase for private suppliers, petrol prices in the atolls are expected to range between MVR 27 and MVR 33 per litre, depending on the island and delivery expenses.
The price adjustment mainly affects private distributors, who supply fuel to many islands where government-operated FSM petrol sheds are limited or unavailable. As a result, most residents in the atolls rely on privately supplied fuel, making them more vulnerable to price fluctuations.
Higher fuel costs could also have wider economic impacts in the atolls. Diesel and petrol are essential for fishing vessels, speedboat transport, and electricity generation, much of which relies on diesel-powered generators across island communities.
