Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Open to Shipping During Ceasefire
Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now open to commercial shipping, offering temporary relief to global energy markets and maritime traffic following days of heightened tensions in the region.
The declaration, made by Iranian officials on Friday, comes amid a fragile ceasefire linked to the broader conflict involving Iran, the United States, and regional actors. Authorities stated that vessels are permitted to pass through the strategic waterway, but movements are subject to specific routes and coordination measures set by Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical transit chokepoints, had faced disruptions and security threats in recent days, raising fears of a major supply shock. Nearly a fifth of global oil shipments pass through the narrow channel, making any instability there a major concern for international markets.
While the reopening signals a de-escalation, analysts caution that the situation remains volatile. The current arrangement is temporary and tied directly to the continuation of the ceasefire, meaning any breakdown in diplomacy could quickly impact maritime access once again.
