US Launches Operation Against Venezuela-Linked Tanker

The United States has begun an operation to seize a Venezuela-linked oil tanker, according to U.S. and international sources, intensifying pressure on Caracas as part of a broader campaign targeting sanctioned oil shipments.

U.S. authorities are moving to capture the Marinera, a large oil tanker previously known as the Bella-1, after a pursuit that has lasted more than two weeks across the North Atlantic. The vessel has been identified by Washington as part of a sanctioned network of tankers transporting Venezuelan crude in violation of U.S. penalties. 

The operation involves elements of the U.S. Coast Guard and military, and follows earlier maritime enforcement efforts including the seizure of two other tankers over the past month. In its campaign, the U.S. has imposed a blockade on oil shipments linked to Venezuela and pursued vessels it says evade sanctions through deceptive tactics such as changing flags and locations.

The tanker, now sailing under a Russian flag, has previously evaded boarding efforts and resisted interception by U.S. forces. Reports indicate that Russian naval assets, including a submarine, have monitored or escorted the vessel during parts of the pursuit, in a move that could further heighten geopolitical tensions. 

Administration officials have not publicly detailed the operation, but U.S. efforts to detain the vessel occur against the backdrop of a broader standoff with the Venezuelan government. Washington’s actions form part of a strategy to disrupt revenue streams for the Maduro regime by targeting its oil exports, which have long been the backbone of the Venezuelan economy. 

The developments come amid heightened global scrutiny of U.S. policy in Venezuela following the controversial capture of President Nicolás Maduro in early January, an action that already triggered sharp international reactions and widespread debate over sovereignty and international law. 

The outcome of the tanker operation including whether U.S. forces will successfully seize the vessel and what legal or diplomatic repercussions may follow remains uncertain as officials continue to monitor the situation.
