Trump Renews Greenland Claim, Says US ‘Needs to Own It’

US President Donald Trump has again stirred international controversy by saying the United States needs to “own” Greenland, citing national security concerns and growing influence from Russia and China in the Arctic.

Trump said existing defence arrangements were not enough to protect US interests, arguing that full control of the vast Arctic territory was strategically necessary. His remarks immediately drew rejection from Denmark and Greenland, both of which stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that its future lies with its people.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, already hosts a major US military base under a long-standing defence agreement. European leaders and analysts warned that renewed talk of ownership could strain diplomatic ties and undermine cooperation in the Arctic.

The comments revive an idea Trump first raised during his presidency, as global competition over Arctic routes and resources continues to intensify.
