The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed a motion in its Gaumee Majlis to begin a major protest movement on October 3, aimed at holding the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu accountable for undermining fundamental rights.

The motion, submitted by Manadhoo MP Mohamed Thoriq, was approved during last night's Gaumee Majlis sitting. It states that the government has consistently failed to uphold its constitutional obligations, accusing the administration of fostering corruption, suppressing freedoms, denying justice, and compromising the independence of state institutions.

The resolution emphasizes that the government has created an environment of fear for citizens, restricted access to information, and avoided transparency. It also highlights growing concerns over the erosion of constitutional principles and the concentration of power in the executive branch.

According to the motion, the October 3 protest will mark the beginning of a sustained nationwide movement to pressure the government into respecting democratic values and citizens’ fundamental rights.

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said the government’s actions not only violate the basic rights of the people but also threaten to drag the Maldives back into authoritarian rule. He called on citizens to join the protests to defend democracy and accountability.
