Israeli attacks on Gaza intensified Tuesday, killing at least 40 Palestinians in a single day, even as negotiations over a ceasefire appeared to advance.

Strikes on tents sheltering displaced families claimed eight lives in Khan Younis and four more in Deir el-Balah. In Gaza City, Israeli forces demolished homes in the south while unleashing heavy fire on the Tuffah neighborhood in the east. Most of the victims were civilians seeking refuge from months of relentless bombardment.

The overall toll of Israel’s war on Gaza has now reached at least 62,064 dead and 156,573 wounded, according to health authorities, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and hundreds of thousands forced into makeshift camps.

Mediation efforts are ongoing, with Qatar confirming that a ceasefire proposal including a 60-day truce has received a positive response from the Palestinian side. Israel, however, has yet to reply.

The war began after the October 7 attacks in which 1,139 people were killed in Israel and more than 200 were taken captive. Since then, rights groups and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned of mass atrocities, accusing Israel of targeting civilians in violation of international law.
