Europe No Longer Dependent on U.S. Security Says Finland President
Finland’s President Alexander Stubb said Europe is capable of defending itself without relying on the United States, highlighting growing calls for stronger European military autonomy.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Stubb said Europe has the manpower and capacity to protect the continent, citing Finland’s large reserve force and rising defence spending. He described the moment as a new phase for NATO, where European members must take greater responsibility for their own security.
Stubb stressed that the remarks do not signal a break with Washington, reaffirming the importance of NATO and transatlantic cooperation, but said Europe must be prepared to act independently if necessary.
