MMA Suspends Head of Financial Intelligence Unit
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has suspended Ismail Sajid, the Head of its Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), according to reliable sources.
Sajid has been instructed not to report to duty. The MMA has not issued a public statement explaining the reason for the suspension or outlining any related proceedings.
He was appointed to the position in August, following his resignation from the Tax Appeal Tribunal. The FIU plays a key role in receiving and analysing reports on suspicious financial activity and supports the Maldives’ anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.
It remains unclear how long the suspension will remain in effect or whether interim arrangements have been made to oversee the FIU’s operations. The MMA has yet to comment further on the matter.
