Muizzu Should Resign, Not the Cabinet Says Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it is not the cabinet that should resign, but President Mohamed Muizzu himself.

Speaking in Hulhudhoo during a visit to Addu City today, Nasheed made the remarks in response to the ruling Peoples National Congress PNC) suffering a major setback in the council elections held on the 4th of this month.

Nasheed said that following the election results, the government dismissed several cabinet ministers. He also pointed out that statements from the President’s Office suggested those resignations were made at the direction of the President.

Referring to this, Nasheed emphasized that blaming around ten ministers for the electoral defeat is not reasonable. “In a country where democracy is functioning even minimally, the President would resign. This is not a moment that can simply be ignored,” he said.

Highlighting the scale of the loss, Nasheed noted that the government failed to secure a majority in any city council or win any mayoral seat. He added that based on visible results, 68% of voters did not support the government, describing it as a significant political defeat.

Nasheed made these remarks while traveling across the atolls with Fayyaz Ismail to gather public opinion on proposed constitutional reforms and broader governance changes in the Maldives.
