Severe Smog Engulfs New Delhi as Islamabad Air Quality Worsens
New Delhi remained shrouded in severe smog and dense fog this week, with air quality staying in the “severe” to “severe-plus” category across multiple monitoring stations.
High concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have significantly reduced visibility, especially during early morning hours, leading to flight delays and cancellations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Authorities have continued strict pollution control measures while urging residents to limit outdoor exposure.
In Islamabad, air quality has deteriorated to very unhealthy levels, driven by winter weather conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground. Smog and intermittent fog have reduced visibility in parts of the capital and surrounding areas, prompting health advisories for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
The situation in both cities is being intensified by cold, stagnant air, vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and seasonal factors that prevent pollutants from dispersing. Officials in India and Pakistan have advised the public to wear protective masks, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and stay updated on air quality alerts as winter conditions persist.
