Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Malé today on a two-day official state visit, marking his third visit to the Maldives as head of government. He was warmly received at Velana International Airport by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with full state honors, reflecting the close diplomatic ties between the two neighboring nations.

The visit holds significant diplomatic weight, featuring high-level bilateral discussions between the leadership of both countries. A joint press conference is scheduled, where key agreements are expected to be announced.

During the visit, a number of MoUs are anticipated to be signed, enhancing cooperation in fisheries, healthcare, environmental protection, and tourism development. India will also officially hand over several major development projects completed under its Line of Credit to the Maldives — a symbol of New Delhi’s continued developmental support to the archipelago.

This visit underscores India’s continued commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” foreign policy, and reflects efforts from both governments to strengthen bilateral relations through economic and strategic cooperation.

India was the first country to recognize the Maldives’ independence on 26 July 1965 — a historical cornerstone that continues to influence bilateral engagements. In the decades since, the two nations have cultivated strong diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people ties.

As the Maldives prepares to mark its 60th Independence Day this week, Prime Minister Modi’s visit is seen as a timely gesture of friendship and regional solidarity.
