Former President Waheed Resigns as Special Adviser Amid Epstein Link Allegations

Former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has resigned from his position as Special Adviser to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following revelations of alleged close links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The resignation comes after the United States Department of Justice released files containing Epstein’s emails, which reportedly include multiple communications sent by Waheed to Epstein. The disclosures have raised questions about the nature of their relationship, with the documents suggesting that Waheed and Epstein met on several occasions.

Epstein, who was accused of sexually abusing minors, producing child exploitation material, and blackmailing influential figures, died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial.

According to the released documents, Waheed is said to have sought political advice and strategic counsel from Epstein on matters related to Maldivian politics. It is also reported that Waheed consulted Epstein during the political crisis surrounding February 7, and later sought Epstein’s assistance in connection with the 2013 presidential election.

The files further indicate that Waheed discussed the possibility of selling an island to Epstein for resort development, though no evidence has been presented that such a transaction took place.

As public criticism intensified, calls grew for Waheed to step down from his government role. In response, Waheed tendered his resignation, stating that he did so to avoid causing further controversy while holding a state position.

In a statement issued by his office today, Waheed denied any involvement in criminal activity, asserting that he never met Epstein in an official capacity, nor was he involved in any wrongdoing. He also expressed regret over having had any association with Epstein, acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the late financier.

The developments have sparked significant political debate in the Maldives, with renewed scrutiny on past political relationships and accountability of public officials.
