Muizzu Signals Support for US Presence if Chagos Returned to Maldives
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his readiness to support the United States, should the Maldives attain sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago.
Speaking in an interview with the US magazine Newsweek, President Muizzu said that while Chagos remains under British administration, existing security and defence arrangements between the United Kingdom and the United States allow Diego Garcia to be used jointly with allied countries, including the Maldives. He added that similar arrangements could continue if Chagos comes under Maldivian sovereignty.
President Muizzu stated that if Chagos is returned to the Maldives, any arrangements related to the continued operation of the US Naval Support Facility at Diego Garcia would be facilitated through the People’s Majlis, in line with constitutional procedures.
He reiterated that historical records clearly show Chagos to be linked to the Maldives, and that its return to Maldives sovereignty would be more just than transferring it to any other country. Muizzu has previously stressed that the Maldives has a strong claim over Chagos based on historical and legal grounds.
Since assuming office, President Muizzu has also formally written to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom regarding the issue, seeking engagement on the matter of Chagos sovereignty.
