MDP Finalizes Local Election Slate After Competitive Nationwide Primary
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) successfully completed its internal primaries on yesterday, finalizing its slate of candidates for the April 4 Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections. The primary, contested by 154 candidates nationwide, drew significant attention for both its competitive races and notable upsets.
In the most closely watched contest, incumbent Malé City Mayor Adam Azim secured the party’s nomination in a decisive victory over former MP Ali Azim. Azim’s win positions him to seek a second term in Malé’s mayoral seat, a key battleground ahead of the general election.
Another sitting mayors also retained secured nominations. Among them, the Mayor of Thinadhoo City, Saud Ali, secured the ticket on yesterday's election.
The primaries produced surprises as well. Current council member Saif Fathih, a prominent figure in local politics, was defeated in his bid for nomination, reflecting the competitive and unpredictable nature of this year’s internal party contests. While details on all individual results are continuing to be finalized, his loss marks one of the more notable upsets of the evening.
Party leaders have since called for unity moving forward, urging candidates and their supporters to work together to maximize MDP’s performance across the islands in April’s elections.
The results set the stage for a politically charged local election cycle that could influence national dynamics ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
