Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has asserted that the current government has no legal authority to imprison him, warning that any attempt to do so would be a serious mistake.

Speaking at a People’s National Front (PNF) rally held on Tuesday night, Yameen addressed ongoing speculation surrounding his legal situation and political future. He told supporters that there is no lawful basis for his incarceration and suggested that efforts to jail him would amount to political retaliation.

“This government cannot jail me,” Yameen said, adding that any move to imprison him would backfire on those attempting it.

The former president framed the issue as part of broader political pressure, insisting that the law does not permit his detention under the current circumstances. He also indicated that he is not intimidated by threats of legal action and remains resolute in his political stance.

Yameen’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions, with opposition figures increasingly criticising the government’s actions and warning against the use of state institutions for political purposes.
