MFDA Warns of Dangerous Chemical in Three Medicines

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a critical health advisory after discovering dangerously high levels of a cancer-linked chemical in three specific medications.

The alert follows a formal notification from the South East Asia Region Network (SEARN), based on laboratory tests conducted by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration. The tests revealed excessive amounts of NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine), a chemical classified as a probable human carcinogen. Studies on animals have linked NDMA exposure to cancers of the liver, lungs, and other organs.

The affected medicines are:

  • Metformin Hydrochloride (by Unison Laboratories, Thailand): An oral medication primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes.

  • Ranitidine (by Medicis Remedies, India): A common medication for heartburn and acid reflux.

  • Vitamin A USP 200000 IU (by Zee Laboratories, India): A high-potency vitamin supplement.

While the MFDA confirms these specific batches have not been formally imported for sale in the Maldives, they warn of a significant risk through personal importation. "Given that Thailand is a popular medical destination for Maldivians, individuals may bring these medicines into the country for personal use," the authority stated.

The public is urged to check any medications they possess that match these brand names and manufacturers. As a precaution, the MFDA announced it will be conducting extensive checks at all ports on imported prescription medicines to prevent these products from entering the country.

Authorities advise anyone who may have purchased these medications abroad to consult with a healthcare professional for guidance on safe alternatives.
