Was ‘Operation Alimagu’ a Show of Force? Public Demands Answers

Concerns are mounting over the government’s high-profile security sweep “Operation Alimagu,” after authorities revealed few details to justify the dramatic deployment of more than 500 officers across Malé and the arrest of nearly 90 individuals on Tuesday night.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu promoted the operation as a decisive crackdown on crime and public disorder, but critics and members of the public now question whether the operation was more of a political show of force than a targeted law-enforcement effort.

The operation spanning multiple uniformed departments was carried out on 13 November. Home Minister Ali Ihusan claimed the sweep successfully captured individuals wanted under warrants, suspects in major cases, and members linked to what he described as “foreign mafia networks” operating clandestinely in the Maldives.

“This country will not be handed over to those who seek to destabilise it,” Ihusan declared, warning that anyone working in collaboration with foreign criminal groups would face firm consequences.

However, despite the minister’s strong rhetoric, the government has released no evidence detailing these alleged networks, nor clarified how Tuesday night’s arrests uncovered such groups. Reporters note that the majority of detainees appear to have been arrested for minor or unspecified reasons, raising questions about the credibility of the operation’s stated objectives.

Legal concerns have also emerged. Although arrests must be presented to court within 24 hours, the Criminal Court's publications did not show no significant remand hearings took place for arrests made that night fueling speculation that many detainees were held without proper legal procedure.

Further controversy erupted as photos and footage circulated online showing officers detaining individuals seemingly at random, prompting criticism of potential abuse of authority and the intimidation of civilians under the guise of a security operation.

With transparency lacking and no further details forthcoming, “Operation Alimagu” is now at the centre of public debate. Critics argue the government may have used the operation to project strength amid rising pressure over governance and security, rather than to dismantle any meaningful criminal activity.

As calls grow for clarity and accountability, the government faces increasing scrutiny over whether the massive operation delivered genuine security benefits  or simply political theatre.
