President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s National Day remarks have stirred backlash after he appeared to take indirect aim at the media, at a time when his government is already facing criticism for pushing a restrictive media bill.

Addressing the nation, Muizzu warned that media narratives could be akin to “throwing a bomb into society,” language widely interpreted as an attack on independent journalism. Critics argue his comments reflect the administration’s growing hostility toward press freedom.

The speech comes as parliament considers a proposed media law condemned by journalists, civil society, and international watchdogs as an attempt to tighten state control and silence critical reporting. Opponents say the bill would undermine democratic values by granting the government excessive authority over the press and imposing harsh penalties on reporters.

Observers say Muizzu’s rhetoric reinforces fears that his government is seeking to weaken independent voices while shielding those in power from scrutiny. Many Maldivians have voiced alarm on social media, warning that media freedoms won through decades of struggle are now at risk.

Press freedom advocates continue to call on the administration to withdraw the bill and respect the role of independent journalism as a cornerstone of democracy.
