British Couple Dies During 60th Visit to Maldives
A retired British couple have died following a scuba diving incident while holidaying in the Maldives, during what was their 60th visit to the island nation, according to people familiar with the matter.
Elaine Richmond, 70, and her husband Malcolm Richmond, 71, were diving near Ellaidhoo Island in North Ari Atoll, a well known dive site, when the incident occurred in December. Elaine Richmond died shortly after the dive, while Malcolm passed away several days later after receiving medical treatment.
Maldivian Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths, and initial findings indicate the incident was accidental. A UK coroner’s inquest is expected to examine the medical and procedural details later this month.
The couple were experienced divers and long-time visitors to the Maldives, having returned regularly for nearly two decades and celebrating Christmas on the islands for many consecutive years. They were well known among resort staff and fellow travellers, with tributes highlighting their deep affection for the Maldives and its marine environment.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family and remains in contact with Maldivian authorities.
