Foreign Minister to Face Parliamentary Questions Over Masood Imad's Remarks
Maldives’ Foreign Minister has been issued formal notice and parliamentary questions following controversial remarks made by the country’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad.
The parlimanetary questions will be asked by Galolhu Dhekunu MP Meekail Naseem, who said the High Commissioner’s recent comments about the Sri Lankan government were “tactless” and reflected “poor judgment,” adding that they warranted his immediate recall.
In a post on X, the Meekail said he had submitted questions to the Foreign Minister seeking clarification on the government’s position regarding the envoy’s statements, as concerns grow that the remarks may have crossed diplomatic boundaries and risked harming bilateral relations between Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Masood Imad, who serves as Maldives’ top diplomat in Colombo, had recently made public comments criticising Sri Lankan authorities over their treatment of Maldivian nationals, including visa processing and alleged discriminatory practices. While some Maldivians have supported his decision to speak out, others have criticised the tone and manner of his remarks as inappropriate for a serving envoy.
The controversy has triggered debate within political circles and on social media, with critics describing the statements as inflammatory and unbecoming of a senior diplomat.
The Foreign Ministry has yet to publicly state whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the High Commissioner. However, the issuance of formal parliamentary questions signals that the matter has now become a political issue, with lawmakers seeking accountability and clarity on the government’s diplomatic stance.
