Maldives Remains Silent on U.S. Military Action Against Venezuela

The Maldivian government has not publicly condemned recent U.S. military attacks on Venezuela or the detention of President Nicolás Maduro, which Caracas has described as a violation of international law. The silence from Malé has drawn local criticism, particularly as the developments raise concerns over sovereignty and human rights.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has frequently emphasised national sovereignty and an independent foreign policy, has not issued a statement on the issue. Other government officials have also avoided public comment, despite the matter being debated internationally and criticised by several countries at the United Nations.

Political observers argue that the lack of response reflects reluctance to challenge U.S. power rather than a neutral diplomatic stance.

The episode has renewed debate over whether Maldives’ foreign policy is guided by consistent principles or shaped by caution towards global superpowers.
