Parliament Confirms Ahmed Mahloof as Maldives’ New Ambassador to Japan
he Parliament of the Maldives has unanimously approved the appointment of former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof as the country’s next Ambassador to Japan. The vote, held Wednesday, saw all 60 lawmakers present endorse the nomination.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu forwarded Mahloof’s name for the post following the death of the previous incumbent, Hassan Sobir, in July. Mahloof’s nomination had been reviewed by the Foreign Relations Committee before being presented for a final floor vote.
Earlier this year, Mahloof formally left the opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and joined the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), a move that stirred significant public debate. Prior to his ministerial role, Mahloof served several terms as a Member of Parliament and has had a long political career beginning with the now-defunct Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), later moving through the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and MDP.
With his confirmation, Mahloof becomes the Maldives’ new diplomatic representative in Tokyo. The appointment restores full representation in Japan after Sobir’s passing earlier this year.
