Muizzu’s Pressure Led to Asma’s Removal From Social Affairs Committee
Central Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed has been removed from the Social Affairs Committee she once chaired, in what party insiders say is a direct response to pressure from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following last week’s messaging controversy.
Asma came under criticism on November 26 after sending constituents a text asking those wishing to speak at the President’s upcoming community meeting to inform her in advance. The message triggered backlash, with critics accusing her of trying to manage or filter public participation.
President Muizzu reportedly expressed his displeasure and urged Asma to issue a public apology. On November 28, she released a statement saying her message had been misunderstood and apologised.
Today, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that Asma had been removed from the Social Affairs Committee and replaced by Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali. No explanation was given for the change.
The move has intensified speculation that Asma’s removal was effectively a political reprimand ordered by the President. As a result, she now serves only on the Housing Committee.
