Israel Seizes Humanitarian Flotilla Bound for Gaza, Hundreds Abducted in International Waters

In yet another act of aggression against the Palestinian people and those who stand in solidarity with them, Israeli occupation forces have illegally intercepted and abducted hundreds of volunteers from the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful humanitarian convoy sailing to Gaza with vital aid.

The flotilla, carrying food, baby formula, medicine, and more than 400 volunteers from 47 countries, was attacked in international waters, where Israel has no jurisdiction. Volunteers were drenched with skunk water, assaulted with water cannons, and their communications cut off before being forcibly taken aboard Israeli warships.

This blatant violation of international law is part of Israel’s ongoing attempt to maintain its illegal blockade of Gaza a blockade that has starved, suffocated, and brutalized over 2 million Palestinians for nearly two decades.

The abducted include activists, doctors, lawyers, and ordinary citizens who risked their lives to break the siege and deliver hope to Gaza. Their courage was met not with respect for humanitarian law, but with abduction and intimidation by one of the most heavily armed militaries in the world.

Adalah lawyers representing the participants have warned that the detainees face illegal detention in Ashdod, while families and supporters around the globe wait anxiously for news of their safety.

Intercepting unarmed humanitarian vessels in international waters is not only piracy, but a war crime. By targeting the Global Sumud Flotilla, Israel has once again shown its determination to crush even the most peaceful efforts to stand with Palestinians.

“This is an unlawful abduction, in direct violation of international law and basic human rights,” the flotilla’s statement declared. “Every act of repression against our volunteers only strengthens our resolve to break the siege.”

Despite Israel’s aggression, the spirit of the flotilla remains unbroken. The very name “Sumud”, steadfastness reflects the Palestinian struggle and the unwavering determination of people worldwide to challenge injustice.

From Poland to France, from Algeria to the UK, ships from across the globe joined together to demand freedom for Gaza. Their interception proves not weakness, but the lengths Israel will go to silence solidarity with Palestine.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has called on governments, institutions, and civil society to demand the immediate release of all abducted volunteers and to intensify efforts to end Israel’s illegal blockade and system of apartheid.
