Maldives Without Defence Minister for 24 Hours Amid Cabinet Turm
Maldives has gone roughly 24 hours without a sitting Defence Minister following the sudden resignation of Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, raising concerns over governance and continuity during a period of political upheaval.
The vacancy comes in the wake of a broader cabinet shake-up that has seen multiple ministers step down after a significant electoral setback for the government. As of now, no official replacement has been announced to lead the Defence Ministry.
While the Maldives National Defense Force continues its routine operations, the absence of a civilian head means key policy decisions and high-level directives may face delays. Analysts say that although there is no immediate threat to national security, prolonged uncertainty could impact coordination and strategic planning.
In the interim, responsibilities are expected to fall under the direct oversight of President Mohamed Muizzu or be handled administratively within the ministry.
