Palestinians Begin Returning to Gaza as Israel and Hamas Agree to Ceasefire Deal
Palestinians have started moving back into Gaza following the announcement of a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking what could be the beginning of the end to one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent years. The truce, approved by Israel’s Cabinet and confirmed by Hamas, comes after weeks of intense diplomatic negotiations mediated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
Under the terms of the deal, fighting is expected to halt within 24 hours, with Israel agreeing to gradually withdraw its troops from key positions in Gaza. Hamas, in turn, will begin releasing 20 Israeli hostages within 72 hours of the ceasefire’s start, while Israel will free more than 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds serving life sentences.
Senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya announced that the group had received official guarantees from international mediators and the United States ensuring that the war will be permanently ended. Israeli officials have confirmed that they will maintain security control over specific areas to prevent future attacks but emphasized that the ceasefire marks a “significant step toward de-escalation.”
Despite the agreement, Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks continued in parts of Gaza prior to the truce taking effect, resulting in several casualties. Nonetheless, residents displaced during the fighting have begun cautiously returning to their homes, particularly in Gaza City, as hope slowly replaces fear.
The deal also includes provisions to reopen humanitarian corridors, allowing food, medical aid, and essential supplies into Gaza. The Rafah crossing with Egypt will be a key route for humanitarian access, coordinated with international observers to ensure safe passage.
While the ceasefire has sparked cautious optimism across the region, many remain skeptical about its durability. Analysts note that without strict monitoring and political commitment from both sides, the fragile peace could unravel quickly. Still, for thousands of Palestinians making their way back into Gaza, the truce represents a long-awaited moment of relief and the possibility of a new beginning after months of devastation.
